Networking For Windows XP

Top  Previous  Next

These instructions apply ONLY to NEW networks, where NO data or programs have ever been shared between your computers in the past.

Before you follow our instructions, make SURE that no one has previously networked the PC’s to share any data, program(s) and/or printers which reside on your main computer.

If you have any doubts about whether anything has been previously shared from the main PC, you should not proceed and should instead contact a computer / network tech or someone else with networking experience to assist you in sharing Frazer between their PC’s.

Detailed Networking Instructions for Windows XP

STEP ONE:  Naming your main computer and creating a work group.

1.Go to your main computer (your server). What is a server?
2.This computer is the one that is currently running the FRAZER program and has all of your data.
3.Click on the Start button at the bottom of your screen.
4.RIGHT click on My Computer.
5.Click on “Properties”.
6.Click on the “Computer Name” tab at the top of the window.

You should now be seeing a window similar to the one below (don’t worry if it is slightly different):

NetXP1

7.Click on the Change button.
8.We suggest changing the computer name to SERVER. We suggest SERVER since this computer is going to be your main server and it is helpful in identifying this computer.
9. Type in a workgroup name
10.We suggest you use something resembling your business name, something as short as possible but still clear (maybe your company initials?), and something without spaces.  For example, we use FrazerComputing.  All computers in the same workgroup should have the same workgroup name here.  Write down the work group name you use for future reference.
11.Click on OK at the bottom of the screen.
12.A window will eventually pop up welcoming you to the work group (giving the work group name you just entered).  You can just close that window.

STEP TWO:  Allowing the FRAZER program to be shared.

1.Stay at your main computer.
2.Click on the Start button at the bottom of your screen.
3.Click on My Computer.
4.DOUBLE click on the Local Disk C:.
5.RIGHT click on the Frazer30 folder.
6.Click on Sharing and Security.

A window should appear that looks something like the window below:

NetXP2

7.The “Network sharing and security” section may appear different on your window.  If you see a message such as “If you understand the risks of sharing files on your computer, click here,” go ahead and click where that message indicates.  You should then see the window that appears above.
8.Click the box to the left of Share This Folder On Network.
9.This will cause the share name to appear in the box on the next line.  Usually this share name will be Frazer30.  If the share name is anything other than Frazer30, write it down for future reference and wherever Frazer30 appears on the rest of this page, substitute it with your share name.
10.Click the box to the left of Allow network users to change my files.

Your screen should now look like the screen below:

NetXP3

11.Click on OK.
12.If you want to make sure you are now sharing the folder, after a few seconds you should see a little hand under the Frazer30 folder.  This means that the folder is ready to be shared with other computers.
13.Close any windows that are still open.

You are done with the main computer!
