Detailed Networking Instructions for Windows 95/98
These instructions apply ONLY to NEW networks, where NO data or programs have ever been shared between your computers in the past. Before you follow our instructions, make SURE that no one has previously networked the PC’s to share any data, program(s) and/or printers which reside on your main computer.
If you have any doubts about whether anything has been previously shared from the main PC, you should not proceed and should instead contact a computer / network tech or someone else with networking experience to assist you in sharing Frazer between their PC’s.
STEP ONE: Naming your main computer and creating a work group.
This computer is the one that is currently running the FRAZER program and has all of your data.
3.
Click on Start at the bottom of your screen.
4.
Click on Settings.
5.
Click on Control Panel.
6.
DOUBLE click on the Network icon.
7.
Click on the button labeled File and Print Sharing.
8.
There may be a line in the white field saying “File and printer sharing for Microsoft networks”. This is NOT what you want to click on. Click on the grey button labeled“File and Print Sharing”. Clicking on this button should bring up a new window.
9.
Check the box next to “I want to be able to give others access to my files”.
10.
If you also want to share the printer connected to this computer, check the box next to “I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer(s)”. If you are only using one printer between your computers, and want to be able to print from all computers, this box needs to be checked.
11.
Click on OK.
12.
Click on OK in the little window labeled “File and Print Sharing”. This will bring you back to the main Network window.
13.
Click on the Identification tab at the top of the window.
14.
In the field labeled “Computer Name” we suggest typing in SERVER. What is a server?
15.
Type in a workgroup name in the field labeled “Workgroup”. What is a workgroup? We suggest you use something resembling your business name, something as short as possible but still clear (maybe your company initials?), and something without spaces. For example, we use FrazerComputing. Write down the work group name you use for future reference.
16.
Type in a computer description if you wish. The computer description is just for your own reference. It may be “Office computer,”“Corner computer,” “John’s computer,” or you can just leave it blank.
17.
Click on OK at the bottom of the screen.
18.
When you are asked to reboot the computer, click on YES.
STEP TWO: Allowing the FRAZER program to be shared.
1.
Stay at your main computer.
2.
RIGHT click on the My Computer icon located on your desktop.
3.
Click on Explore.
4.
Click on the + sign to the left of your C: Drive.
5.
This will be located on the left hand side of your screen, in the column labeled “Folders”, where “My Computer” should be highlighted at the top.
6.
RIGHT click on the Frazer30 folder.
7.
Click on Sharing.
8.

You are done with the main computer!
STEP THREE: Mapping the network drive, or in simpler words, getting your workstations to read FRAZER from your main server. This step will need to be performed at each of your workstations.
1.
Go to one of your workstations. A workstation is any computer you are going to network that is not your main computer.
2.
DOUBLE click on the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop.
3.
DOUBLE click on the Entire Network icon.
4.
DOUBLE click on your company’s workgroup icon. The name under it will probably be something resembling your company name. It will be the workgroup name you created in step one.
5.
DOUBLE click on SERVER. SERVER is your main computer. If you did not change your main computer name to server then you will double click on your main computer.
6.
RIGHT click on FRAZER30. If your share name was not FRAZER30, then right click on your share name.
7.
Click on Map Network Drive.
8.
Click on the pull down menu next to Drive, and chose a drive letter. We recommend F: (for FRAZER) if it is available. If F: is in use, you can use S: (for SERVER). If both F: and S: are currently in use, choose any available drive letter. Just make sure you write down or remember the drive letter that you use.
9.
Make sure the box next to Reconnect at Logon is checked.
10.
Click on OK.
11.
You now have this computer reading the FRAZER program from your main computer! Since this computer is reading the program from your main computer, it already has all of your data in it.
You are almost finished!
